Michel Camusat Pouilly Fuisse `07 $35.00 (not TJ's) ****

I am torn on how to write this post.  Do I write about the spectacular meal and events surrounding how we came to be drinking this wine? Or do I keep it simple and describe this wonderful (and priced as such) Chardonnay? Maybe I'll try to incorporate both.

Chardonnay is a versatile white grape that can be fermented into a broad spectrum of wine. This variety is decided by where, when and how you grow & ferment the grapes; and can make the chardonnay spectacular (like this Pouilly-Fuissé or recent White Burgundy ) or can make the wine barely drinkable (Novella Chardonnay - shudder).  This grape is suited to so many climates and regions that there is endless variety in the tastes and character of the finished wine - all fermented from the same grape varietal.

Pouilly Fuisse, an AOC chardonnay exclusive region in France grew this sublime Chardonnay, and Michel Camusat fermented and bottled it. After JPH did some careful menu planning, he paired this with dinner for Lucie and Dan who were stopping off (with Malbec in hand for future reviews) in NY en route home to London after a week of polo in Argentina. As it had been their steady diet for a week, red meat was specifically OFF the menu, so JPH made Julia Child's Braised Whole Fillet of Salmon with cream sauce and rice.  It was a rich, subtly flavored dinner that matched perfectly with this dry, restrained wine with a base minerality and highlights of fresh white peach,  not very sweet and very subtle citrus notes: a light grapefruit/lime that lent a clean taste. I would just call this wine sublime.

As for the company and the dinner....
Perfection, which culminated in homemade Apple Pie.
